How to model a starburst rosette

as requested on support…

…another project . . . . Making wooden rosettes to match specifically a pattern the client has.

where the current file state is:

The first thing which needs to be done is to draw the tool and design up in profile. We will assume a 60 degree V tool.

Done

copy-paste

Mirror horizontal

Drag two parts into registration:

Select both:

Join Vectors

Yes

Scale

Done

Draw the stock:

Then draw the surface width:

Then drag the tool in at the deepest which it can cut:

and duplicate it to the opposite side:

We will assume that there is a basic cut of 1/8" deep using the V tool along the perimeters and a pocket which clears the balance of the material, so we draw a line to represent that bottom:

Done

Move

Done

Selecting the elements which we are working with:

we then use Trim Vectors which allows us to trim down to what we want to measure:

Ok

Deselect:

and use the Measure tool:

to get the inset distance of 0.0722 for the two circles:

Apply

Cut these as a Contour and as a pocket (A V-carve toolpath w/ pocket clearing could be used, but I believe this will be conceptually clearer and make for more efficient cutting:

Adjusting the Stepover may be desirable:

Next we will want a straight line:

(it must be drawn from the two original circles to ensure that it is vertical/aligned w/ the center of the circles — if need be, use the Align tool to ensure that the circles are aligned with the Stock)

Done

Use the Circular Array tool:

dragging the center to the center:

adjusting the number to match:

OK

At this point, there are two options, make the ideal version and select alternating instances and have two toolpaths, or inset the radial lines slightly and use one toolpath — we will do the former as conceptually easier and more correct.

Select the lines in question:

and use Region Builder:

Yes

to make one instance:

Done

Use Circular Array once again:

(note that it loads the previously used settings)

Ok

Create a new layer and move the elements to the new layer:

OK

Hide the other layers and deselect:

Select every other wedge:

and make a layer and move to that new layer:

Assign a V-carving toolpath to each set of wedges:

Select by Layer

OK

Repeat for the other set:

Thank you for the fantastic tutorial @WillAdams. Every time I read through a tutorial I find something that reaffirms my ignorance of CNC. I’ll not admit to my ignorance but it was found here:

Thank you again for the knowledge.
