I love finally getting a CNC and not even being able to do step 1

I know they were busy over Black Friday but really really annoying when you finish your table and go to start putting the shapeoko together and cannot even finish step 1 since they did not include the loctite…
Another trip to Home Depot I guess…

We haven’t been able to source thread lock in quantity for a while now — it’s not strictly necessary — there are three schools of thought on it:

  • use thread lock on anything which doesn’t need to be adjusted
  • use it on any fastener which vibrates loose
  • a properly torqued mechanical fastener should not need chemical assistance

I’d suggest the middle way — skip the trip to the hardware store until a fastener vibrates loose.

The best way to think about any machine you work with is:

Do the regular maintenance on it before it tells YOU when to do the maintenance on it.
So, don’t wait to get something that you think you might need later on as a precautionary measure now. It will save you time and money later on.

The big thing for that is:

Only problem with this approach is when something goes loose and you bust a 60 quid cutter. Maybe affordable for big shops but not the hobbyist. I agree get going today but go back and use thread lock soon.

If it’s a tool purchased w/ a new machine, it’s covered for the first 30 days — plenty of time to make a hardware store run at one’s convenience:
