Inlay in a pocket question

I want to do inlays in the floor of a pocket. Picture a serving tray with a raised rim that was pocketed out of a single piece of wood and then has inlays in the floor of the pocket. I tried a sample using some crap wood kicking around in the shop, but the fit wasn’t right.

I got depths for the inlay “female” by adding .2" to the depth of the initial pocket that made the lip. Should I re-zero to the bottom of that pocket before cutting the female?

ETA. I am switching to a 30 degree bit.

The female will be cut as part of the first file using the same origin as the balance of the file.

The other file will need a new piece of stock and the origin set to it per the file.

I realize that. I’m asking if the female being cut to .4" (.2" into the new surface) will an effect on the geometry in relation to the male part being cut to .2"

It shouldn’t — you wouldn’t want to include the geometry which creates that added depth.

So when starting the female pocket just start at the .2" and bottom out at .4". The male and female pocket and inlay must use the same vbit or things wont fit right. So if you use a 30 degree advanced vcarve for the female pocket you must use a 30 degree for the male inlay. The flat end mill is not as important but should be the same or unexpected things happen.
