My setting for the female portion is
And my setting for the male inlay is:
And my results are .8 mm gap on both sides of the letter:
Should I increase my Inlay Mode gap to .8mm?
Why am I having this problem?

Your gap on the sides of the letters is horizontal, whereas the “Glue Gap” in the operation is vertical, below the insert. To close that gap with a 6.2° cutter you would need to increase the glue gap by 7.4 mm
Another problem is that you are using a tapered ball mill rather than a V-bit that comes to a sharp point.
I would recommend at least a 30° V-bit. I prefer 60°
And the Starting depth on the insert should be 0.0. So start & max depth on both sides are the same.
ok, thank you for getting back so quickly. so increase gap yo 7.4mm in the inlay mode? and keep everthing else the same?
after this job im going to stick with 30 degree v bit
I still dont get what you are trying to explain. I thought it might be the bit i was using but i thought by using the amana 46280 would give me better detail.
No! 7.4 mm was just the correction value needed to close the gap. Your path is only 2.8mm deep.
Male - Start depth: 0.0 Max depth: 2.794 Bottom Gap: I would start with 1mm
Use a proper V-Bit
Start with 1mm gap, then fit the female to the male on the machine without moving the male.
Measure the gap between the boards & adjust your gap in the program accordingly.
You’re programming with a Vee-bit, and cutting with a tapered ball nose.

I was having trouble with that too. It’s fairly easy to do the same thing manually. The problem lies in the inside corners and lines that converge to a point. So I take each corner and use the rounding the corner tool and put a round corner, the same dia. as the bit you are going to use and round off the corners. Then when making the male part decrease the whole piece by .003 and the plug should piston fit the cut this method is not the same as Advanced V carve. When I make a sign I carve the pocket and leave the letters sitting proud of the surface so my letters are 3D.
The problem is I already cut the female pocket with the bits I stated in the previous email. I would have to start all over making a new END grain cutting board.
I’m just going to increase the max depth 2mm at a time.
Edward, I love that sign, the 3d look. Do you inlay the letter/design into the bottom piece of wood or do you do an advanced v carve that just pockets around the letters?
However much you add to the max depth, add the same amount to your bottom gap.
i.e. You’re at Max: 2.794 Gap: 0.01
If you increase the Max to 3.794, increase the Gap to 1.01
That should trace the vector at the same depth, so it will cut exactly what you have down to 2.794, but then cut deeper around it. I think you may have some round corners fitting into square corners, or vice versa. But a good heavy weight or some force might make it fit just right.
Thank you, you were very helpful
Todd,
Im still having problems, there is still a gap when I put the inlay into the female .
The only thing I can think of is sand the top half of the male portion and maybe it will fit?
What if I redo the cutting board female pocket with a 30 degree bit?
Sounds like the top (which is the bottom when flipped) of the male is bottoming out in the female.
Yes, either take some off the top of the male, or make the female deeper.
It might help to draw it out to visualize it. mark a line on that pocket in the picture, and take some measurements on a cross section.
Then you can draw in what you need to do to get it to fit.
Ok ill try it again.
Have you seen (two moose design) on youtube, he uses the same bit im using 46280 (ball nose) and it looks like he is going at least 4mm deep on his male and female pockets. Ive reached out to him but no answer yet.
I really appreciate your help, ive been waiting on tech support to get back to me for 2 days and when I initially called (made an appointment) they could not help me at that time.
Still waiting for their help…so i really appreciate you!
