Installation spindle 8kg for SO5 pro

I am approaching you because I want to install an 8kg VDF (2.2Kw air-cooled) on my shapeoko 5 pro 4X4.

I searched the net and the C3D forum but I couldn’t find anything specific.

Is the Z-plus axis of the SO5 pro sufficient to install an 8kg spindle?

Thank you for your feedback

I believe so.

We have an 80mm mount and matching spindle in development — check w/ sales and see if they know what it might weigh?

I’ve been running a water cooled 80 mm spindle with similar weight for 6 months. It is not an issue. Ran the same spec spindle for years on a belt driven s3xxl with our issue other than increase belt replacements.

And the z axis in the 5 pro is not a z plus. It’s a ball screw hdz.

Your spindle will drop when power is shut off or the e stop is pushed fit to the weight of the spindle. I just have a wooden block to keep my bits safe.

You’ll also either need to modify a spindle mount or make an adapter plate to mount it. Carbide does not make an 80 mm mount at this time. I chose an adapter plate out of aluminum. That I made on the machine with the trim router.
