Installing New Dewalt 611

Just bought a new Dewalt 611 for my Shapeoko Pro XL. Waiting for new Spindle Mount and Sweepy.

Obviously the Dewalt base is irrelevant to it’s future use, so that’s on a shelf. But, when I install the 611 in the mount, do I want to get rid of the height ring? Seems like I saw some comment about that but of course I can’t find it now. Usual stuff I cut is 3/4". On rare occasion 1.5" - 2"; never more.

The height ring can be removed by screwing it off. On my SO3 install the router all the way down in the mount. @WillAdams has recommended many times to set the router height in the mount install your shortest bit and bring the router down until the bit touches the spoilboard.

I have a Dewalt 611 in my SO3 and in 7 years have only replaced the brushes once. I bought a second Dewalt 611 with plunge base to use in the shop. It could be a backup but I may never need a backup with the dependability of the Dewalt. The Makita/C3D routers need their brushes replaced more often than a Dewalt. Also the bottom bearings on the Makita/C3D router go out on a regular basis requiring replacement of the bearings and/or replacement of the router. The only disadvantage of the Dewalt is the Makita/C3D can run slower than the Dewalt. That has never been a problem for my needs.

I would recommend buying a better wrench to tighten the collet. I bought a shorter wrench to keep me from over tightening the collet.

Additionally I bought collets from elaire.com

Be sure to go down to the palm router section.
