It’s profligate of material.
Interesting technique. I’d guess you’d need to make sure you don’t create any serious up-forces - or you could pull the flipped piece out of the pressure-fit. I think I would clamp that into place and not rely on the pressure fit…still an interesting way to assure alignment.

I think I would put a screw with a fender washer on it in two of those slots.
Yes…and we all know that if it works once, we can rely on it!
