Hi all , hope someone has some insight into an issue i am having. I have emailed Carbide Support alittle while ago and dont expect to hear from them for a day or two.
I am running a 3XXL with an HDZ. Every so often while raising my hdz , could be homing or a bit change or even carving, it will stop and start to make a grinding sound. I am not sure if it is my stepper or the HDZ itself. I have cleared out any debris that i could see. It still does it. When i reboot the machine it will work normal for alittle while and then do it again.
ANyone ever experience this or may have some insight into my problem?
Make sure all wiring is on good condition and all connectors secure? The connectors should be located somewhere that they won’t shift and all the wiring leading into and away will remain fixed in location relative to the connector — it may take some creative arrangement and zip tieing to ensure this.
Check the Z motor coupler at the top. They sometimes come loose. As @WillAdams suggested if you have not lubed the HDZ try that as well. Knock on wood my HDZ has never given me any trouble in 3 years. The HDZ was the best upgrade I ever did on my SO3. If you were an SO4 I would recommend checking your connectors. I have never seen any people complain about the SO3 connectors but I would be a good idea to check those as well.
Start with the lube, rail blocks and the ballscrew, the seals on the rail blocks can really stick on the rails if they run dry, and that sticking can damage the seals too.
I am giving it a good cleaning and then will oil it up. Hopefully that helps. Since this problem was intermittent, i will run a few carves and see what happens. Thanks for the info. Hope it helps.
Is it a black or blue coloured HDZ?
After cleaning and lubrication, try rotating the ballscrew by hand to see if the carriage is binding anywhere along its full travel.
If so, a realignment of the rails might be needed.
