Hello! Been awfully busy this year finishing my basement/workspace. So, my Shapeoko hadn’t seen much use for about 4 months. I’ve been using it a bit more lately and was pleasantly surprised when I saw the updates to the software since I had last booted up. But one thing I notice, that I am pretty sure my machine didn’t do before, is a bit of a hard jolt upon connecting. It cuts fine and everything else is normal. Did something change or am I crazy?
My Shapeoko Pro has always made a (jolt) when powered up. Its all the motors getting power and getting set. When initialized there is a slight (bump) when the axis are finding the travel limits for each one.
Not related to your problem but I would give the machine a once over checking all the fasteners, belts and even a lube since it has been sitting for a while.
Generally stepper motors will always have a jolt when they are first powered up. Its generally nothing to worry about its just the poles lining up and applying the torque braking.
That’s why you cant move the thing they are attached to when they are powered without quite a bit of force. When they aren’t powered you can.
Also, be careful when moving the gantry or anything really attached to the motors, as even when the machine is off those motors moving under your power are generating electricity and feeding it back to the controller. Always move it slowly and smoothly by hand.
That makes sense! Perhaps it was just the downtime and I was less aware beforehand. Do you know if there is a good resource or guide for maintenance? I’ve just always used the machine without noticing anything bad, other than wear on endmills.
