In order to cut anything in 3D you will need:

  • a 3D model — it has to preview in the 3D area
  • geometry which defines the region which you are cutting out in 3D which will then be associated with the 3D toolpaths
  • 3D roughing and 3D finishing toolpaths — these will cut away the material to reveal the 3D model

a further requirement is that there isn’t a 2D toolpath which cuts away the 3D model.

3d rough pumpkin.c2d (2.7 MB)
Instead of a 3d pumpkin I get a pocket cut of a pumpkin shape.

The 3D is there at the bottom of the pocket. You just need to cut out the face & outline.
It looks like you may have used the default height when you imported the STL. I would bump that up to your 0.5" stock thickness. If you only select the outside vector for roughing, it will clear out the eyes, nose & mouth.

Other recommendations: Use a larger tool for roughing. Use a ball mill for finishing. Not a lot of sharp detail on this model, so I would go with a 1/4" ball.

Add in your contour path to trim out the outline. Add a few tabs to hold it in place.
