Looking for inspiration (and a file) on first 3D carve

So I have this big chunk of 12/4 basswood. It was a spacer block in a large unit of rough basswood lumber. It’s about 12”x12”, but there’s a lot of wane so there’s only about 9” wide at full thickness.

I’m about to begin working on a different project but I find myself thinking about this free chunk of wood. I want to do a 3D carve of something, only because I haven’t done one yet - but I also don’t know diddly about 3D modeling yet either…. So in order to be able to toss this chunk on the sawdust robot this weekend, I’m thinking I would want to either buy or find a free file to cut.

Any suggestions?

Any particular place you’d like to do a topographic model of? I’ve done a few that turned out quite nice…

That’s a beautiful piece, Michael.

The scale of a topographic map isn’t really calling to me for this. I am hoping to use the of depth of this stock to do something that really plays with multiple depths and fine details throughout the piece- I’ve seen wall hangings that are composites of flowery designs and sculpted figures. Maybe something I can hang on the wall. Originally my head went to like an animal’s face or a mask, but not sure there either. Something abstract maybe?

These are done by hand but might give some inspiration as to what can be pulled out of the depths:

Doc, I can’t tell where you’re posting from, but I’ve bought good stuff from this site: https://3dwave.us/.

Shall we say their files are eclectic?

is this a work safe kind of eclectic or no lol?

I saw gnomes. They are never appropriate, anywhere.

What happens in the garden stays in the garden…and no-one really knows what truly transpires there. Gnomes are like 7-11 with their mischief they might not always be doing business but they are always open.

Take a look at this site, you may find something there.

I have this one modeled for a 4"x6"x1" piece of stock, I just haven’t cut it yet. Your welcome to the file if you’d like. It’s set to cut with a 201, 202, 101 using a bitsetter for tool changes.

Some really nice suggestions here, thank you! I

After way too much searching, I decided to go with these two files:

It wasn’t a style I was looking for but these just caught my eye and I really fell in love with these celtic knot-style tree of life designs. Inspiration!!

I’m thinking I’m going to do them as a flip job so they look like opposite sides of a giant coin. I may build a stand for it as well so either side can be displayed.

We’ll see how it goes this weekend!
