Manually control S5 Pro BEFORE initialising?!?

Hi all,

My VFD cable has somehow got trapped in the left side of the Y Axis so I’ve got a chicken and egg situation.

I basically just need to move the Y axis 10mm back to free the cable, however I can’t jog control as I need to initialise and I can’t initialise as it can’t home correctly due to the cable!!

Any tips/ideas?

With the power off you should be able to move the gantry by hand.

Ah ok, will try this and see if I can free it!

Move it slowly so it doesn’t damage the steppers.

Or, one can bypass homing switches as described at:

Hmm, anytime you move a motor manually it is acting as a generator… I wonder, is it possible to move x y by hand quickly enough to make enough amps to damage electronics upstream? Either way, I assume Cullen is on point with moving slowly as the rule of thumb! I just wonder if that produced electricity would do anything.

One of the reasons we added the shaft to the rear of the steppers is to make it possible to slowly move the machine while it’s powered off without forcing it and moving the steppers too quickly.

You should be able to slowly rotate the stepper with a pair of pliers if you need to move it. (With the machine powered off, of course) If you’re moving one of the Y motors, be sure to move it a little at a time, alternating between the right and left to keep the gantry roughly aligned.

Slow move has worked great - I’ll need to 3d print a little extender to keep the cable clear of getting trapped!

Can you show how you got it trapped? I’ve never experienced this. is it not run through the drag chain?
