Manually moving gantry USB disconnects

Tracking down a disconnect issue and today when manually moving the gantry noticed I sometimes lose USB connection to pc. Controller is powered but not turned on. Is this normal?

The stepper motors function as generators when moved manually, so push up current to the controller.

The controller is not supposed to power up unless the power supply is plugged in and turned on, but some USB connections seem to provide enough to make a connection anyway.

Please only connect to the machine when the power supply is connected and turned on and the machine is fully initialized.

Thanks, but I was not connected, CM was not even open. I heard the USB disconnect sound on the pc a couple times and investigated further. I open device manager and see the USB Connection getting removed/ added at the same time.

Would you expect moving a stepper motor causing me to lose connection to pc. Could this also be occurring during normal operation?

Technically you shouldn’t have a connection if the controller is off. You should be able to remove the USB cable when the controller is off and get no message. So as Will pointed out, you got power from moving the gantry.

My USB port on my controller is a little flakey. I used a adhesive wire tire holder to put wire tie on the usb cable to keep from any movement. My cable has a ferrite bead about 2 inches from the end and made a perfect place to put the wire tie. It may not be your case but you can get those adhesive wire tie holders at the big box stores. They are handy to secure all kinds of cables like the power and BitSetter, BitRunner and BitZero cables.
