Meshcam V-bits for Nomad?

Hello all-

I have finally tried to brave through MeshCam for a friend after nearly two years of owning the Nomad. Part of the reason why I wanted to do CNC work is to do detailed small detailed work from my 3D models, especially with the engraver.

Only to see… it may not be possible? Is there a way around having the two options in the program of end mill or ball mill? Can I fudge the program and call it a tapered endmill?

@Rusted_Folly, when you define a new tool, if you select “tapered endmill” as the tool type you can enter a taper angle (angle is per side, so a 30-degree bit will be 15 degrees per side)

Thanks for the insight! I was trying to see if I can cheat the system by adding the #502 in (it takes a whole lot longer to calculate toolpaths than the #111 and ended with a crash when I tried to save the g-code) but did not know that details about the Taper angle per side. I’ll see if adding in the 10 degrees instead of 20 degrees makes a difference.

So just ensuring clarity, I can actually claim a V-Bit as a tapered endmill, no prob?

@Rusted_Folly, someone who knows more than I do will need to answer that. I don’t know what a V-bit would be other than a tapered endmill of a certain tip diameter and possibly corner radius? I have a couple of Melin tapered bits I use for engraving fine lines/text but I use them at a fixed depth and have never done relief machining with them.

Yeah, one of the reasons why I wanted to make my own post, since I know this has been in previous conversations was because, from what I could tell, using the v-bits were mainly used for text instead of reliefs in the other scenarios.
