Hello,
I have a Shapeoko 4 and purchased Carbide Create Pro… I’m not really sure where to begin for learning how to do 3D texturing and whatnot.
I want to create a moon with some basic craters and such. I can create the file in Cinema 4D, Rhino 3D, Illustrator or Photoshop but I’m not sure what I need for resolution and such.
I’m cutting a circle plaque, with a moon texture in the background, and I’d like some raised flat/untextured lettering.
Any advice would be very much appreciated!
Thanks,
Jordan

For a moon texture, you have a couple of options:
draw it and approximate it using the texture feature and possible some V carving and other toolpaths
draw it, and 3D model it in Carbide Create or some other program
source a b/w pixel image depth map which can be imported into Carbide Create Pro
source a 3D model of the surface which can then be cut using a 3D CAM tool or converted into a depth map and imported into Carbide Create Pro

Terrain Relief Models, Unabridged

When I was musing about picking up a Shapeoko, the project I had in mind was carving a terrain relief model of Mount LeConte in the Smokies, and in my head I also had the trails engraved onto the model. In the quest to make this thing in my head a reality, I followed various trailblazers, perfected workflows, had epiphanies, scrapped entire workflows, wrote some plugins, added a laser, and eventually arrived at what seems to me like a…
Thanks Will! This is really helpful. I’m going to experiment with all of these possibilities.
