I received my 65mm VFD yesterday and got it installed. Did a quick test carve. WOW! Now I know why everyone raves about the VFDs!
Reading through the install manual, it suggests disabling the spindle with the Spindle Enable button at every tool change. Is that necessary if the spindle has moved into position for a tool change and stopped spinning?
The install manual does not cover the VFD Controller panel. Is there documentation on the panel? Anything I should be doing on the panel or paying attention to?
I’ve never disabled the spindle for a tool change. Although it’s probably not a bad idea. Just an extra safety measure.
Carbide presets & locks the VFD to prevent you from mucking with it. The only thing I’ve ever paid attention to is the Hz display when I first got it to check the RPMs actually match what’s programmed. (Mine is really close. Although I’ve seen others post it was off by quite a bit.)
And the Reset button when needed.
If you watch any woodworking videos about maintenance they tell you to unplug your machine. I have a Powermatic 66 table saw. It has a magnetic switch and I never unplug it when changing blades. The magnetic would have to fail in a way it was never designed to fail. I also put a magnetic master switch on my SO3. If the lights go out when the come back on my machine is powered off and the router will not come back on.
The VFD has to have a command sent to turn on. So as @Tod1d said he does not disable the VFD. I would call it belt and suspenders. Your belt will hold up your pants but the suspenders make sure the belt works. So disable if you feel better but the controller is not likely to send random commands to the vfd and even greater odds it would send the exact command to power on and spin the vfd.
Disabling is not a bad thing but it is an extra step and you have re enable it to continue. Safety first is an important rule but some rules are meant to be broken if it makes sense to do so.
