Nomad 3 info, plus something else

the real question is how do I explain a 3rd shapeoko to my wife

Well if you leave two Shapeoko’s alone together, things are going to happen.

Yeah… I am thinking of how best to approach the subject with my better half as I just got my laser set up… I may be able to use the angle that my current XXL desperately needs linear rails (ya know, for production accuracy/reliability for the business…) but that I can’t afford to have the machine offline going into the Christmas season while this dumb monkey tries to figure it out. So logic dictates I must have another machine up and running when I go to do the upgrade. The new Pro kills two birds with one stone… maybe she will go for that?:thinking::joy::rofl::joy::rofl:

And that rigidity for that price (and built in BitSetter)

Very nice job on the pro! Although it’s hard to look at after I just blew my budget on upgrades for my So3 but maybe by the time the XL comes out I can figure something out.

I do like those 15mm belts with rails. Are the motors more powerful?
How much harder in Aluminum can it run?

I see zero problems with that logic.

Similar motors, but mechanically different for shaft length and wiring.

@wmoy will be doing some videos in the near future to show the machine in motion. I’ve seen a bunch of private videos from Edward, who was the lead on this project, and it’s good.

OK, I’m ready for Contest #14 now.

Will the Nomad 3 have a larger footprint than the Nomad Pro?

Same work area, I believe Rob said in a previous thread it was slightly taller.

I think the new machines look awesome. I have a login for Inventables (Xcarve) and periodically check out their forum as well as Openbuilds. I think Carbide3D make the best machines for consumers with all the accessories like, BitSetter, BitZero and BitRunner, you leave the competition in the dust. I keep expecting XCarve to try to add the accessories. I started with a simple Z belt and added the HDZ, BitSetter, BitZero and BitRunner and with the Carbide Create and Motion my machines is a hum dinger. I need to sell my Shark Pro HD and get one of the Pro Shapeoko. You will see me in the shop cleaning up around the Shark to take pictures and put it on craigslist. If anyone is interested in a Shark Pro HD with upgrades please PM me. I in east Texas.

Are the electronics for the new Nomad still grbl-based? I really like my CNCjs workflow and would prefer to keep using it if possible after getting a new machine.

Interesting idea with the side removable windows. It would be easy/cleaner to add a hose for dust extraction or other expansion ideas. Maybe the cutouts can be included so we can have matching grain for these custom accessories?

It must be the camera angle; I was thinking it looked a lot bigger; 25x25 or so.

It’s so good to wake up to this news \o/
Beer holding at its finest !

I suppose this is the power switch on the SO Pro (same one as on the Nomad?)

I was already thinking of wiring that to the Feedhold signal and blinking that light when the machine is paused. Is it bad to want to mod a machine that’s not even out yet ?

Yes they are grbl based

Dang it that’s awesome… haven’t upgraded to linear yet. Is there a possibility to retrofit or is a retrofit kinda set planned ?

New nomad looks okay. Is it still limited to 10,000 rpm?

I a little disappointed that the Nomad’s bed is still the same size as the cutting area. If it was a few inches bigger, you could clamp something that is 8"x8" onto it and actually use all of the cutting area.

ā€œNew spindle design with angular contact bearings running at 24K RPM.ā€

That’s the part I’m very excited about.

Thanks for the clarification. For some reason I attributed the speed to the bearings and not the spindle itself, and dismissed it as the performance of internal workings of the machine.

Big congrats guys, lots of wins on many fronts here. I never realised the outside machine shop caused so many issues for you.

I have a burning question that will ultimately decide whether I go with the Shapeoko Pro or not…
You say it will be offered in XXL size first, is that the same work area as the current XXL? or a new size of XXL?

If it can fit a half sheet of ply (1200mm width) then I will sign up right now.

Killing it! Great job! Other than belt naysayers, it seems to solve almost every issue that people had.

Don’t like vwheels… how about linear rails.
Don’t like the MDF bed because it could use some more support and work holding… how about a combo of lots of extrusion, wasteboard, and t-track.
Disconnects… have some extra EMI protection.
Trouble wiring… simplify that and add way more drag chains and their own beds.

Seriously nice work. I’m excited to get my hands on one. I’m still keeping ye olde reliable XXL though.
