Not carving as spec,ed

Please take a look at the name, Jamie in the lower left of this carve. When it carves the “I”, it is not putting it in the correct place. It’s not putting it where the file shows it or where the simulation shows it.

Sorry, I am on my phone. I will post the carbide create file from my computer.

Logo Carve with GW.c2d (388 KB)

If you watch the simulation, it carves the “I” in question almost last, with the top left corner of the “E” next to it, then the top left corner of the “T” above.

Something knocked the X axis off kilter shortly before the “I”, and it cut everything after that too far left. Could have been a bit before. the top of the “J” is also off.

Somewhere it grabbed, bumped into something, hit some kind of obstruction & lost some steps.

Appreciate the thoughts. But I do not believe that is the issue. It is carving in the middle of the board and not hitting anything. I tried three times with the same results. No bit changes during the carve. The top of the “J” is actually not cut off. The font doesn’t have a cross at the top of the J.

I really think there just be a bug in the G code or something.

I converted the Jamie Rudy | Realtor to curves so I could increase the size of the capitals (J R R). I am going to try putting it back as text and having 6 separate text fields with the J R R a higher point size. Will let you know.

There is not a bug in the G-Code. If I simulate it in CC, or in a 3rd party simulator, the letters look exactly as designed.

The fact that the “I” was off, and everything after it, and a few motions before it indicates that at some point the X axis lost steps. Why, I don’t know. sometimes it’s something as trivial as hitting a hard spot in the wood, like a knot. I think more frequently it’s something mechanical, like a dust collection hose getting caught on something, or the sweepy hitting something.

It could also be electrical interference of some sort. I had a recurring problem a year or so ago where right after closing my enclosure door the machine would lose steps & cut in the wrong place. I eventually figured out that as I was closing the door, right after the tool change, the hinge of the acrylic door was charged with static & I was bumping the motor mount with the hinge. Mea Culpa!!

The 3D preview in Carbide Create:

matches the 3D preview in a 3rd party G-code previewer:

So why is machine not carving that???

Note: it messed up the same way 3 times so the chances of something bumping it off axis at the exact same point seems unlikely.

So after I changed it to text, it did it correctly.

Feeling safe, I did it on my live piece and it screw up the word “Handcrafted”. Gheezz. What is going on??

BTW - it looks good for me in preview too. That is why I was so confused about the outcome.

Because step(s) were lost in the cutting.

Usual causes:

  • backlash from loose belts or pulley
  • drag of the vacuum hose
  • interference from a cord or hose getting caught
  • wrong feeds and speeds/resistance of the cutting material
  • some other mechanical infelicity

Thanks guys. Will do more testing and let you know.

Must have been my dust collector hose. I disconnected it and it carved fine.

Thanks for the help!!!
