Hi, new here but not new to CNC. I have an older Shapeoko xl machine and today while making a cribbage board that I’ve made a few hundred times before the machine got about 90% complete then it lost track and went on a trip of it’s own ruining the piece. I tried a different project and again about 1/2 way through the cut it lost it’s way and ruined the piece. Any Ideas. I’m looking at getting a 5 pro with the ball screws as my current machine is belt driven. I’m very frustrated as I’ve never had too many problems with this machine.
Are you getting disconnects, or is the machine continuing to cut after the error?
If it’s continuing, then the usual suspects are
- mechanical, especially the drive pulleys
- Binding during cutting. Are any of your cuts ‘slots’ the width of the bit?
A picture of one of your pieces after the error would be useful.
It keeps cutting after the glitch until i hit my emergency stop button.
I have the belt driven 3XXL and i have had this happen when my eccentric nuts become lose or my V-wheels are worn. My bit will hit a tight spot halfway through a project and i will skip steps. Try powering up machine and testing all v-wheels on ALL axis’s.
Thanks Tony, I founf that the guide bearing for the belt on the x drive had loosened off ever so slightly. I tightened them up and made sure all the v wheels were snug as well and haven’t had a problem since. Shows that maintenance is worth the effort. LOL
