Is it typical that oramask leaves a sticky residue on my work piece and very difficult to pull [quote=“rickogg, post:1, topic:19236, full:true”]
Curious if anyone else is experiencing this issue?
I’m having a lot of problems with Oramask 813 adhesive coming off of the mask and remaining on my project.
I’ve tried Oramask 813, 811, and 810s. Most of my previous problems were related to the solvent in the"rattle cans" making its way through the vinyl mask and creating a similar problem. Oramask 810s solved the solvent problem but it’s “tackiness” was to weak for CNC work.
On this attempt, I did not paint over the mask as the router bit was too dull and did a very poor job.
When removing the (unpainted) mask, as you can see from the picture below, the Oramask 813 adhesive remained.
I can even lift up a portion of the adhesive and pull it off, which tells me that the paint / polyurethane on the sign did not compromising the Oramask adhesive.
I’ve experienced this from multiple rolls of Oramask sourced from a variety of suppliers.
I’m at a loss as to alternative approaches. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

it of . Now with that said , will over spraying with shellac cover the sticky residue
Many products like poly off gas for months. They are dry to the touch and can be handled but are not fully cured for quite a while. Similarity if you paint a shelf with latex paint and let it dry a day or two and then put something flat on that shelf it will stick to the paint. The paint was not fully cured and can cause things to stick to the surface.
In practical terms you cannot finish a project and then let it sit for a few months but it may be the solvent in the finish off gassing and causing a reaction with your mask.
I have used oramask and did not particularly like it. You have to order it from speciality companies and there are multiple products which all do something different. I go to Walmart and get the EasyLiner Adhesive Shelf Paper. It is cheap and readily available and has never left a residue behind. I do use a J roller to press down Oramask or the adhesive shelf paper so I get good adhesion. The adhesive shelf paper is a good alternative to Oramask for me but mileage varies. It is certainly cheap enough just to try.
Maybe try a small piece on top of the residue to see if it will lift up the residue.
I bought some vinyl shelf liner from the local resale shop. I was VERY pleased with the results. I was able to use spraypaint to ‘fill’ the portions I had run a V-carve on, and after pulling the shelf liner off had very little touch-up painting/sanding required.
I purchased the shelf liner you recommended . It was a disaster. I used a flat plastic putty knife and I used a roller to attach the liner . While cutting, the liner came up in several places. What did I do wrong?
When I used the shelf liner I just put it on the raw wood. I was only interested in painting the areas where I was carving. I think I used an old credit card to remove air bubbles before machining, it mostly pulled off without any issues. I think I used a blunt knife to get a few small pieces off that weren’t connected to the rest of the liner.
