Oramask Tear Out

I’ve been testing Oramask on painted MDF and I keep getting tear out even though it’s adhered really good. I used a 60 V bit and 1/8" EM. I’ve never seen anybody on Youtube have problems with Oramask. What could I possibly be doing wrong?

Try the shelf liner from Lowe’s. I have found it to be quite good and cheaper than oramask.

I’ve never carved painted MDF only hardwoods like Cherry and Oak coated with dewaxed Shellac. I use a J-roller to make sure the film is properly adhered to the wood. You may also want to use downcut endmills like Cadence Mfg has to offer:

I also use the Amana 46200K downcut 1/8" endmill.

Both of these seem to work really well with Oramask 813.

Here’s a source that has Oramask 813 for much cheaper than Amazon.

I had one job that kept wanting to tear out the mask, so I programmed a cut with the stingray vinyl cutter & precut the mask before milling.

Would this work with a drag knife? What do you do? Would you put on the Oramask, run the drag knife, then remove the design, then without moving anything, run the regular tool paths with the cutters?

Yes, same kind of tool. And yes, I just traced the outline & removed the mask where the tool would cut.

I just cut a sign today using Oramask 813 from amazon. Bought my 3rd roll of Oracal Oramask 813 Stencil Tape (12" x 20 Ft) @ 1.00 a ft. I also used a 1/8 downcut bit to clear and a 1542 Triple flute 1/4 60 degree bit to finish. I used white primer on this job before applying the mask and used a flat plastic squeegee to put it down on the board. Just take your time to put the mask on and make sure all the bubbles are out flat to the board.
