Other Uses for Carbide Create

I have used CC quite a few times as just a drawing program. I made a train whistle a week or so ago but it failed to work. Today I was in Tractor Supply and they had a Train Whistle on the check out counter. I bought it for about $5.00. I brought it home and reverse engineered it.

So I created a drilling template in CC and exported it as an SVG. I imported the SVG into LibreOffice drawing. I printed it and measured it and it was the exact size I drew it in CC.

I copied it about 12 times and printed it. I want to make a few of these train whistles and drilling the flute holes is likely the hardest thing to do accurately.

This is not really a CNC project. I do plan on engraving something on the side of the whistle but making it is strictly woodworking without a CNC.

After bandsawing the end off I was able to measure the flute holes depth and the reed so I am all set. I could have just done this by trail and error but CC will make this extra easy (I hope).

Ages ago, I actually knocked out a book cover design in Carbide Create because it was better suited to the design I envisioned than any other tool.

(I did have to export the SVG into a second tool to assign grey values)

I use it as a simple drawing tool quite frequently. A lot of the little drawings I add to posts here, as well as elsewhere.
I also use it occasionally to geometrically solve math problems.

I’ll use it in conjunction with another image software (Gimp, Inkscape) to create mock-ups of prospective jobs for customer approval.
