If you want complete control, use Photoshop. But if you just want nice results and you don’t really need to control everything about them, just put them into an AI engine like GROK or ChatGPT and tell it what you want it to do. It might take a little trial-and-error to get something that you want - or - it might happen right away.
Guess it depends on what you mean by ‘enhance’??
Gimp is a free alternative to photoshop.
But for simple edits, Paint or Paint.NET work.
Canva bought Affinity software a while back. Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher can do what Adobe does at a fraction of the price. When Canva bought Affinity they made a web version that is free. Just search for Affinity Software and you will find it.
The applications still work but are not updated anymore but the web version is kept current. Canva is trying to get you to subscribe to their AI client but it is not required to use the Affinity software.
Oh wow! I just wrote paragraphs contradicting you, I have Affinity as a stand-alone app resident on my computer. But I did my due diligence and checked the website, so sad you’re correct.
Nothing good lasts. The Affinity suite was terrific in that it provided Adobe class workflow without subscription and at a low price. But I suppose an online access will suffice for sporadic projects, not a big fan but better than subscription.
I still use the application on my computer but I have tried the online version. I think they are pretty much the same. Of course as I already said Canva is trying to get you to subscribe to their applications. The good news is you dont have to subscribe to use the online version.
I cant remember but I think the application was about $69.00 but my memory is fuzzy. However free is free. I am in a photo club and many of the members use the Adobe products and spend a monthly subscription. It is not cheap and frankly their software is complicated. Not saying Affinity is simple but you can bluff your way through if you have any knowledge about editing images.
I still use Inkscape for most simple SVG conversions. That is free and is well maintained for an open source software.

I’ll just kind of say it again - ChatGPT is your friend - and it’s free to use. Here’s a simple example.
I took a photo of a kid’s table and chairs that I made:
I put it into ChatGPT and used the following prompt:
Create a new image that removes the patched wall from the background and substitute a black fabric background that extends under the table and chairs. Improve the contrast and saturation of the image
And it produced this:
So I then said,
Remove the wrinkles from the fabric
and it produced:
So then I didn’t like the loss of detail on the back of the chair where it got blown out by the lighting, so I said:
Repair the blown out detail on the back of the chair on the front left making it uniform with the rest of the chair details
and it created:
It took all of about 2 minutes. I could have done all of it manually in Photoshop, because I’ve got a LOT of time in Photoshop under my belt…but WHY?

Now…how can I get that into my Shapeoko???
I think this is a feature request for CC Pro!!! Create designs using AI and be able to carve them. DO IT.

Its called Vectric Easy Create. Because it understands that we are using CNC to cut on wood.

Can CC use an STL or grayscale image? Then the resulting file is ready for CC now.

Sure…but if you want to iterate with your design, seeing it modeled in CC, to the preview, integrate it to other tools - you’d have to go back and resave, reimport and retrofit your design. The beauty of having the capability in CC itself, is the ability to iteratively develop your design…just like you do with the current tool sets. This is just another tool that provides a shortcut.
Ok, but don’t hold yer breath waiting for it to happen … 
… and that works for exporting from EasyCreate.
Try it; you’ll like it, and don’t fret about spending a few bucks to get into 3D.
