My Shapeoko Pro has had random occurrences of a Z-Axis Grinding issue over the 1.5 years that I have owned it. today, I had to re-initialize my machine four times before I could get a clean initialization and probing cycle.
Please write in to support@carbide3d.com and send us photos of the Z-axis motor wiring connectors — we had a bad batch of them and yours looks to have been affected.
check the wiring, specifically the connectors. Check for loose wires, pins not seated, any signs of corrosion or arcing, or discoloration of the plastic.
If you do find problems, Carbide will probably help you, OR you can hard-wire where each connector is.
Some times the sensor is too far away from the metal piece that triggers it. Power your machine off and manually turn you leadscrew all the way up and adjust the sensor so it almost touches the Z axis. As other suggested it could be a wiring problem but it could also just need the sensor adjusted.
Always start with the most simple thing first and then move on to more involved fixes.
Looks like this is the root cause of the issues I have experienced with my machine. Glad to have that identified and can’t wait to get this fixed. I would love to be able to rely on my Shapeoko to “just work.”
