Probe does not press bitsetter button down

I set up my new BitSetter and completed the installation procedures. On first attempt, the machine initialized, homed, then came to front center for bit change. I pressed Resume and it traveled over to the bitsetter as I would expect and then plunged down to the button. When the bit hit the button, the button did not depress. Instead, my z axis motor skipped repeatedly - making that knocking sound.

I tried again, setting up the entire thing again. Same thing happened. To see if was connected, I pressed the bitsetter button by hand and the process continued the way it was supposed to (the spindle rose, then descended, again knocking until I pressed the button manually. It then considered itself done.

I called support and left a message but it’s the weekend…I don’t expect a call. Has anyone experienced this before? My Shapeoko XXL has worked fine before installing the bitsetter.

Thanks.

Since the Z has 75 (ish) mm of travel, it sounds like you were at the bottom of your travel. Is your router slid all the way down?

I’m using the carbide compact router and it’s fully inserted in the holder. I would also point out that the button is noticeably above the level of the wasteboard…so if my z axis can’t press the button, it would never cut anything! I believe the router is in the right place.

Which z-axis are you running? Belt, hdz, z-plus? When the machine power is turned off, can you move the z-axis up and down the full length of travel?

Belt. I get where you’re going. I’ll try to see if I have the travel to push the button. One moment please…

Sounds like you haven’t cut anything yet…most Shapeoko’s need to have a 3/4" (19mm) waste board on top of the OEM table (so that you can reach the bottom of your work).

Problem fixed. And of course, it was a dumb one.

I had raised my suckit support arms up and out of the way while I was working on positioning the bitsetter. The router’s cable was hitting the top of the arm and stopping the descent of the carriage. I realized it while following Scott’s (@Microwave_Monkey) suggestion to move it by hand. Duh. Lowered the supports and everything checked out fine. Now I can get on with testing the bitsetter itself!

Thanks guys.

I just had a flashback of the moment I did the same mistake when I had a Suckit. Twice. Live and learn…
