Problem with cut depth

So I’m having an issue with the cut depth. Using Vcarve Desktop, I’ve set up the cut depth to 0.69 and I’ve set my passes to 0.115 per pass. But everytime I run the file the spindle plunges down about 0.5 and proceeds to cut at that depth. I’ve checked and rechecked and reran the file several times, double checking my Z zero setting and it plunges to 1/2" every time. Is there another setting burried somewhere that I’m missing?

Try making an equivalent file in Carbide Create?

If it has the same problem, we can work through it with you and you can then apply the fix to Vectric.

Im redoing the file in Create. I suspect a corrupt file of some sort as I’ve noticed right at the beginning of when I click start I hear a sudden brief stepper jump. I pause it and recheck the Z height and its off by 1/2". I’ll see how it works with Create.

Check the retract height? If you hit top-of-travel, you will be too low for the rest of cut.

What bit? An upcut bit can pull the bit out of the collet. Use a downcut bit, just to try, and use a slow plunge speed.

The height was too low initally to clear my new U clamps so I did raise it to a value of 3 inches. Although I have about 3-1/2" of total clearance before it tops out. Maybe I should lower it a bit?

We actually had a blog post on this sort of problem:

https://carbide3d.com/blog/unexpected-z-axis-plunges/

Usual causes include:

  • excessive retract height causing lost steps at top of travel
  • confusion between top/bottom of stock in Job Setup/when setting zero
  • lost steps from a cable or hose getting in the way of retract causing lost steps
  • tool coming loose
  • Z-axis pulled into cut by high tooling engagement
