Rapid to Current XY

I’m running Carbide Motion Build 535. Carbide Pro XL. I noticed when i use the Rapid to X Y it does not always return to the exact X Y position from the previous job. X Axis seems fine but Y axis is occasionally a little bit off. Any Ideas. Belt tension seems fine. And don’t see any loose lock nuts on motor pulleys.

Things to check:

  • Y-axis homing switch and trigger are secure?
  • belt tension for both Y-axis belts is as equal as you can manage to get it?
  • gantry is square and both Y-axis rails are parallel and machine frame is square?

I’ve found that pulling the gantry tight against the front end-plates and holding it there when powering up makes for more consistent Y-axis movement.

If you can’t find anything obvious to address, let us know at support@carbide3d.com and we’ll do our best to assist.

Thanks Will. Everything you mentioned above looks good.
I’ll try pulling the gantry tight against the front plate and see if that helps.

The Y axis isnt off by much, just a few mm but its enough that i need to check it when i’m making multiple items of the same design.

One thing i didn’t mention is i’m using a 3/4 core box router bit for this job and since the bottom of the router bit is a radius its hard to determine the exact center of the bit when setting the zero. But that wouldn’t effect the Rapid to XY

To add on to the above — feeds and speeds — that’s a large endmill, and I could easily see it causing lost steps (though I’d expect that to be more likely along X, but that may be the toolpaths or the material — are the cut along X w/ the grain, and Y across it?).

Cuts are along the Y axis with the grain. I’m using popular. Cuts seem to be pretty consistent. Was using plunge rate 12 and feed rate of 40.

Are you getting chips or dust from this tool?

How much material are you removing? Have you tried clearing the bulk of the pocket using supported tooling, then only using this tool as a finishing pass?

Do you have this difficulty w/ smaller tooling at the default feeds and speeds for it?

Im using a depth of 0.35 in 4 passes it 0.1
Some pieces i get chips and some i get dust.
Varies by the different pieces of material
Im happy with the cutting
I dont know if i am getting the Rapid XY issue with other bits and projects
I never really noticed it before but it may be happening.
Its not really a huge issue now that im aware of it.
Just need to check when i go other projects
