Recreating machine part from photo

as requested on support…

Can I import an image of a part into Create which is made from a life-size hand drawing ? What must I do to establish the correct dimensions within the file without redrawing the part ? Does Create have an “enlarge” function ? For example, the large hole in the middle of the part has a 0.7-inch diameter.

Where a file was arrived at on support:

So we make a new layer, move the trace to that and then begin drawing…

As noted, the central size should be:

so a bit of scaling is wanted…

Estimating the size we get:

0.7 / 3.2 ==

so se unlock the original layer, select everything on it (as well as the circle used as a proxy for the size):

and Scale

Done

Drag things to the origin:

re-size the Job Setup:

OK

Re-lock the layer, then check sizes:

We then draw in the other two holes:

and position them:

We then measure the distance of the radius around each circular object:

~0.34

~0.17

and select each set and duplicate and add that dimension to the duplicate:

If a dimension seems off, adjust:

Same for the position (but select both):

If desired, the second may be copy-pasted:

then moved into position and the original deleted:

Draw a polyline which approximates where the lines should be crossing:

Hide the original:

Add the geometry for the round portions of the perimeter to the selection:

and use Trim Vectors to remove the portions which are not wanted:

OK

Delete the drawn polyline:

Then, use the line tool to draw in the lacunae:

Done

Repeating for each necessary segment:

Select everything:

and use Join Vectors to close:

Yes

Just received:

which since it has an 0.25" grid, allows one a bit more control over dimensions.

Counting grid squares we get:

OK

Set Grid to 0.25"

OK

We use Set Background to import the photo:

and attempt to adjust scaling/position until the grids line up:

But there is a limit to reduction:

So we draw a rectangle, and work w/in that:

Adjusting Job Setup to match:

As before, draw the central circles:

Since things will be easier if consistent, align the two holes to either side:

OK

As before, Align Vectors (assuming the part is symmetrical on both axes)

OK

For the two bolt holes, select and group:

then shift-click on the central hole:

adding it as the key object and again align:

OK

The balance is as before,

Duplicate the bolt holes:

and Ungroup:

Select each:

and change the radius as before

Draw in a polyline which crosses the circles at the desired tangents:

Doing only one side, then copy/paste:

and Horizontal Mirror:

and drag into alignment:

as before, select the geometry for the perimeter:

and use Trim Vectors to remove what is not wanted:

OK

shift-click on what is wanted to remove it from the selection:

and delete:

Draw in the necessary lines to connect the dots:

Done

Continuing until one has:

Select everything:

and Join Vectors:

Yes

If desired, use Node Editing to adjust:

Overall, the drawn rectangle should be 14 squares wide, so select everything:

and scale to

14 squares * 0.25 (grid size)

Done

And, now we have a scan:

As before, the file does not allow a direct 1:1 scaling, so we measure the grid at the current size by zooming in:

r

and drawing a square:

12:1 seems a reasonable scale to try for, so we draw an 0.25" square:

then scale it up by 12:

Done

and then adjust the image scaling to line up:

Again, we set the Job Setup to some dimensions to match:

Scale the grid:

and then do a final adjustment of things:

Again, draw circles:

and align:

and measure:

Duplicate by copy-pasting in place:

and add the measurement to the radius so as to offset:

For the bolt holes, again, group:

shift-click to add to the selection:

and Align Vectors:

OK

Ungroup

and add the measurement to the radius of a copy-pasted duplicate as an offset:

on each side:

For a different approach to get the tangents, since things overlap, select the 3 offset/overalapping circles:

and choose Boolean Union:

and check “Keep Original Vectors”:

OK

Choose Node Editing:

and select and delete nodes:

Until you get things shaped as desired:

Zooming in/out as need be:

If you go a bit too far:

just undo:

and iterate:

Note that only one side needs to be done:

Since one can copy-paste in place to get a duplicate:

Mirror Horizontal:

then select both:

and use the new Region Builder tool:

Yes

To select all of the regions which one wants:

(making sure that “Merge Connected Regions” is checked)

Or, use Boolean Union:

OK

Then use the nodes in the Unioned geometry as a guide:

Delete the unioned geometry:

Select the overlapping circles and the drawn polyline:

n
and use Trim Vectors:

to remove what is not wanted:

OK

Select only the polyline:

and delete

w

as well as the small overlaps:

As before, use the Polyline tool:

to draw lines to connect the arcs:

Done

Select everything:

Join Vectors

Yes

Scale

Done

As a check, draw a grid square:

Select everything:

and scale:

Done

e

Select the grid square:

and if desired, adjust scaling further.

Adjust Job Setup:

delete the square

Select everything:

Group

and Align Vectors to the Stock

Setting the grid to match the graph paper, things seem a good match:

Then, Ungroup Vectors:

and apply toolpaths:

Drill

Contour

Cutout

Adjusting as appropriate for material and workholding and so forth.

I would just measure the part and create a new layout.

@WillAdams

Whew…. That wore me out!! Great tutorial for those that don’t have the ability to just measure the part out and create a new layout as Jim points out. Good way to show folks how to scan in or take a photo and gete end result.

@jtclose Yeah, I asked for a dimensioned drawing a couple of times…

Hazards of tech support.

@Redlander The photo probably would have been fine if a ruler had been included in the photo and it had been taken squarely.

That said, lots of ways to skin a cat.
