References to Layer Items - Nullified By Using Group Command

I color-coded several vectors and assigned them to different layers. However, if the vectors need to be scaled and then re-aligned to the center of the work area, I need to highlight the vectors and group them in order to use the alignment tool. After the vectors are aligned with the stock, I remove the grouping designation. Unfortunately, now the vectors are no longer associated with the color-coded layers. All of the vectors are assigned to a single layer.

Is there any workaround to this?

The only work-around is to do all sizing and so forth before layers are assigned, and then eschew any grouping which involves selections other than on the current Active layer.
