Request for a 3D Printed Dust Boot to replace the Sweepy Pro boot

I posted about this here, but I realize that it would be better posted in a more general discussion.

I’m hoping to find someone who can 3D print an updated dust boot for the Sweepy Pro.

The most important design change is that the inner ring of the dust boot - where the bristles attach - needs to be a greater diameter than the largest diameter of the 80mm spindle. Right now, the spindle body will not pass through the opening in the boot - making deep cuts on thicker stock impossible when using the boot.
The red arrows are the diameter I’m referring to:


We can figure out how to affix the bristles - which likely will no longer fit all the way around a larger circumference - at a later time.

Another change that would be great, but is less important:
The current Sweepy Pro requires that the thumb screws (shown at the top of the image above) be entirely removed in order to remove the boot. It would be better if either the boot was secured using just magnets — or that the design be changed so that the boot can be slipped out with the thumbscrews loosened, rather than completely removed.

If anyone can do 3D printing and would like to tackle this project, I - and likely some other folks who have the sweepy pro and 80mm spindle combination - would be interested in buying it.

What are the overall dimensions of that part?

I have an idea I am working on Gary.
I used the laser to cut the ring out of the other boot that came with it, I was going to add an attachment for the bristles like Will suggested but have decided instead to cut the business end off of that boot and replace it with a piece that has a larger diameter and is held in place with magnets.

This is the design I came up with last night. I currently have the opening at 90mm.

It runs about 6.5" back and will sit on the outside of the current boot with the end removed. I plan to cut a prototype in PVC to see if it fits properly before asking a buddy to 3D print for me. I think it may need a sleeve on top but want to get this piece done first to see how things will fit.
I also need the flange for the brush to attach. I ordered a roll of the brush material and it should be here today.

In theory you could slip this on/off whenever you want.

If it all pans out you could do one of these and modify the stock boot or print an entire boot from scratch, but having the ability to slide the front on/off would be useful regardless.

No specific preference on units

The outer width of that part of the dust boot is 82.5mm give or take which is why I went with an approach to totally enlarge the hole beyond the sides.

The trick making a full boot replacement will be precise measurements for the magnet locations unless you make a replacement for the top as well.

@GJM I was thinking last night that a lot of complaints with the thumbscrews could be resolved if the screws went in from the top and screwed into the bottom rather than the other way around. Ansd safer as well, The first time I used it I tightened the left screw and then the right. Then after a few minutes of cutting I noticed the left screw had fallen out and was sitting on the material. Apparently after tightening the right I needed to go back and tighten the left as it had cinched up the boot.

I’m not even sure why the thumb screws are really necessary. My old SuckIt mount did not have anything more than magnets - with the old Carbide router, vibrations were much worse - and it never had a problem with falling off. Maybe it’s the length? But should be nothing more magnets wouldn’t solve, no?

The Suck-It shoe slid into channels on the side, and the magnets kept it from sliding fore-aft in the channel.

The magnets did not provide the force to keep the shoe from dropping down.

But I do think that the screws should either be moved to the top or eliminated.

As far as I can tell:
Overall dimensions: 13.5" x 3.375" x 1.125"
There are eight interior structures: 3 on each side for magnets; 1 for the thumb screw
The structures are centered 5/16" from the edge of the side and are located at 2, 4, 6, and 8 inches o/c from the center of the spindle hole.

Additionally, the unit appears to have a taper at its back end (right of the photo below) - I assume to improve air flow:

I definitely do still need something. I’d like an adjustable fixed height boot (not attached to the spindle itself) that will work with the 80mm spindle. I have the Sweepy Pro attached to my 5.1 pro now, so if it attached to that mechanism, it would be perfect. But I can swap it out for a different design if that works too.


So I understand what you want, this is mod I did to suck smoke when using a laser. So, chop the end off and replace it with an end that will allow an 80mm spindle to pass through?


I can Fusion something up to accommodate an 80mm pass thru but I’d guess you’ll need to reduce your X travel to account for the bulges on either side.

On the 5 Pro the extra diameter on the opening shouldn’t be a problem. I considered that when I came up with the idea I posted above.

Yeah…I think the buldges are fine…because the Z is wider than the boot by quite a bit…that clear plastic circle is already large enough to allow the spindle to pass through…it’s only the bottom where the bristles a ttach.

Give me a few days, I’ll draw something up and run it by you. Shall I include a slot for bristles? I’ll need a spec for that.

I bought a roll of bristles off Amazon. Haven’t decided a good way to hold these on. I was thinking a hose clamp.

I really appreciate it! I think I can just relocate the bristles I have and either use a flexible mag strip or, as @CullenS suggested, use a clamp of some type.
