S3 XXL - HDZ - Lost Z Movement (Part 2)

Hi guys, I’m having this issue again where my bit isn’t going down far enough to touch the workpiece. In my previous thread: S3 XXL - HDZ - Lost Z Movement

I got this answer: “What is more likely is that the origin was set with a longer tool, and a shorter one is now installed and that you are okay to go ahead and finish the cut.”

I’m trying to get clarification on why this is happening and how exactly to fix it.

I ran a project with a 1/8" bit. Turned off the machine. Initialized. Then changed to a 1/16" bit. Now it’s just not wanting to touch down close to the wasteboard.

I tried clearing zero, tried reloading the bit, tried running a project…

Yes I can put a longer end mill in and zero off that, but why? Why is this even happening? Why can’t I zero off a short 1/16" bit.

I’m using latest carbide motion.

My recommendation for addressing this sort of thing is to install the shortest tool which you plan on using, chucked up as much as is comfortable, then carefully loosen the spindle in the mount and lower it until the tip of the tool just reaches as low as you plan on cutting.
