Send to Carbide Motion option not always available

I am having trouble with using the Send to Carbide Motion feature. The feature only seems to be available when Motion is first opened and before Initialize Machine or a job is run. I am sending from a Mac to a Raspberry Pi 4 over wifi. If Initialize or a job has been run, then Carbide is opened, the Send feature is no longer available. If however, I finish a job then press Stop and park/shutdown the machine, I can then press Connect to Machine again as if I’d just reopened Motion THEN open Create again to find the Send option available.
Has anybody found a way to make this workflow smoother? I emailed Carbide support about this and their disappointing response was “I don’t use that feature, I use a USB drive”. This feature was a major selling point for me so I’m sad to see it is half-baked.
Is there a better way to teleoperate the Shapeoko perhaps?

Ages ago, I would control the computer running whatever Grbl communication/control program I happened to be using at the time with a second computer (with a transflective display) via VNC — one of the features which it had was to send files.

Some folks use a network solution — I believe DropBox has been put forward as an option, presumably OneDrive would work as well, just make sure that the file is copied to local storage and doesn’t have a file lock which might interfere. At least one person had an NAS setup at home to manage (and back up) all of their files.

I’ve been considering installing Samba on my Raspberry Pi (which runs Carbide Motion and is connected to my SO5 Pro):

but, I usually only need to cut one file and use Carbide Create/Motion as you describe, sending the file when CM is “listening” for a file to be sent.

Are you running Carbide Create and Motion on the same computer?

There are times when I need to jog X or Y axis quickly from the Jog menu in Carbide Motion for Carbide Create to detect Carbide Motion. Be sure Carbide Motion is in the Run screen when sending your job from CC.

Good catch, I forgot to mention I am sending from a Mac to a Raspberry Pi 4, both up to date and set up as per Carbide’s instructions. I have edited my original post to mention that.

Thank you, I’ll try the Samba solution. I enjoy troubleshooting and playing with these issues, but my wife is the main user of the Shapeoko and I want to make this process as streamlined and reliable as possible.

I use samba on my PI and share the directory to my Windows machine where I do all the design work. Apart from having to occasionally put the password in it works great.

I too use this feature a lot and wish it was more reliable. I have found that it often goes away unexpectedly, but then if i make a change to a toolpath (like changing a depth from .125 to .124) then hit ok in toolpath edit window, then it shows back up almost every time. I depend on this feature so i find myself making micro edits a LOT just to get the button to show up. Any of the filesystem shared drive suggestions work but def more tedious than if the Send to CM button worked consistently

I’ll have to give that a try.

Yes, Stallent, that’s what I’ve ended up doing as well. It seems the toolpaths have to be revalidated before Create will send it, which is a good thing though not intuitive or called out in the instructions.
