Separating a design into parts

as requested on support…

Given a design:

where one is

trying to create vectors between the leaf part of the tree and the branches going up to them.

Trying to make it possible to carve them separately so I can texture the leaf part.

Then one draws in geometry to define the separation:

Then select the geometry:

and ungroup it:

duplicating the geometry to a new layer for reference:

then using the Trim Vectors tool to remove what is not wanted for one version of things:

OK

Note that if there is redundant geometry:

it will need to be deleted:

So that for each region, there is one piece of geometry.

Select by clicking, then shift-clicking to add to the selection one piece of geometry for each region:

then use Join Vectors to close things:

Yes

Then select the redundant/open geometry:

and delete:

Repeat the process for the canopy…

Then clean up as before:

and reposition things so that they line up:
