Shapeoko 5.1 Pro legs

Is there any reason not to add a shelf under the machine attached to the legs?

Because every flat surface is a magnet for junk to accumulate😊

I had high hopes of storing sheet goods on the shelf under my home built table but I end up just piling junk at the front and the back goes to waste.

Those with better discipline than me have better success I am sure.

Seriously though, I have seen others mention adding a shelf. It will require drilling holes I believe.

Preserving open space?

Keeping the underside of the machine open so that one doesn’t bump into it?

Aesthetics for photography?

Space for a piece of furniture on wheels?

Letting you do it and be part of your project.

If it makes your life easier, do it- that’s what the extra holes partway down are for.

Don’t listen to the naysayers. Unless you specifically want to wheel a vacuum/dust cyclone under your machine, I say add a shelf.

There are holes already if you’re going to use 2x4’s or some other lumber. Whatever you build, I suggest making sure you leave enough room underneath for an 80mm water cooled spindle’s chiller (if you have one). You could also put the chiller on the shelf, but ours is just a light duty sheet of un-braced MDF, so it ended up on the floor.

Also, the front-back dimension inside the legs is a near perfect fit for MDF, since those sheets come in about an inch over-sized for cleanup. Plywood is fine too, but MDF fits like a glove.

Any chance you can share info on the dust hose holder you have on the gantry?

Is that shelf using the 5.0 extrusions?

Yep. Since the 5.0 extrusion length = 5.1 extrusion length = width inside the legs, it’s a perfect fit. The hole pattern doesn’t match (little wider, better for stability if you’re screwing into 2x4’s), but if you don’t mind drilling your own holes, it’s a great way to recycle the original extrusions.

@brettdevilbiss it still needs some work. The hose interferes with the VFD mounted on the side. But once we iron out the kinks, we’ll provide more info.
