Maybe two months old machine, about a week ago it started making a horrible screaming noise just on the Z axis during rapid moves only. I have checked the oil levels and added, I have verified every little bolt I can see and all are tight. There are no wear marks on the rails like something is dragging. Can’t make out the exact location where it’s coming from but my guess is more toward the top but who knows… I’ve even added a little extra oil to the rails and screw but still nothing. I have checked the bolts on the stepper motor coupling also. My last guess is the stepper motor itself, could that be it? Has anybody else had this issue??
I’d send a video of what you’re seeing to support so they can take a look at it.
Will try that, thanks
Check the pin that triggers the Z-axis limit switch. It screws into the backside of the mounting plate. Mine started backing out and would drag on the front of the carriage plate as the Z-axis moved up and down. To fix, I put some small clamps on the bottom of the rails to keep the bearings from sliding off, removed the mounting plate, squirted some Loctite on the pin’s threads, screwed it back in with pliers (tape over the jaws), and reinstalled the plate. No issues since.
Hope that helps.
Brian
This happened to me too. Here’s some pics of what happened to mine. Note that it came out far enough to start scraping the front Z-axis plate which left small shavings at the bottom of it. The pin was bent and couldn’t easily be removed, so the whole Z assembly needed to be replaced.
For orientation purposes, these pics are looking down into the Z-axis cavity where.
Sent a video to support, one gave me a few things to check and another guy spotted the problem right off the bat! The collar nut on the top of the screw was the issue. It was at the bottom. No pictures in the manual showed that, I did notice the flat spot in the screw rod and thought that was weird and never touched it laying at the bottom, just looked like a collar, I even sprayed lube in it :)… If I would have seen the pics that ben2ek posted then I would have noticed it, but I know now… This is the only problem with having the 5 vs the 4 and not putting things together, I just don’t know things like I did with the other one… Everything is quite in the shop now and all I hear is my tinnitus, “thanks AF flight line” :)…
