Just wondered it the Shapeoko HDM would do everything the Nomad 3 does?
WIth the normal Shapeoko there is still a difference in accuracy, as far as I understand?
If I want to do fine / small metal work and woodwork as well, would I just need the HDM or is the Nomad still ahead of the Shapeoko apart from the size factor?
From my understanding the HDM surpasses the Nomad in all variables other than cost and portability. They are pretty close in accuracy, with the ballscrews on the HDM having a slight advantage. The HDM will fly thru material much faster.
If you have the room and budget I would go HDM because it’s more versatile given the substantially larger work area and ball screw drive. But it is a big machine with no enclosure and has a rather large water chiller and control box that take up as much space as a Nomad 3 so it needs a good chunk of real-estate.
If you never plan to cut large items or need to push high feeds perhaps it’s over kill for you. But should you become addicted to making chips it’s a nice machine with the potential for an ATC some day. There are no current plans for a carbide ATC. But some users will add ATC function on their machine and possibly inspire Carbide to make the leap.
Also if you should ever need to sell the machine I would bet the HDM will hold a better resale value although shipping would be costly.
