Smooth outline of model in CC Pro

Delving into learning 3D modeling. I used a jpeg image ion Easy Create to create a model which I downloaded as a TIFF image and loaded as a shape in the Model tab in CC Pro.

I used the option to create an outline so I could pocket around the model without having to use rough and finish tool paths. I wanted to used a .25 bit and fine tune the outline with a .125 bit and rest machining.

The problem I ran into was the create outline option created a vector outline nodes on every little nook and cranny around the model and the rest machining tries to clean out every little one. What should take just a couple of minutes to hit just a few small spaces is taking an hour.

I realize that in the image trace tool, there are options to smooth curves but in the create outline option, there doesn’t seem to be any way other than manually go in and try to delete all the unneeded nodes and manually smooth the curves.

I tried it. I just turned 74 Saturday and not only don’t I have the patience, I may not have the time. Any other options?

Also, when creating the outline, you are given the option of enter a threshold. I played with it and couldn’t see that it had any effect.

Sorry, I can’t help much as I have not worked on any 3D modeling yet. I’m sure someone will chime in.

Threshold affects greyscale images and doesn’t work on a b/w image.

You might get more control by exporting a PNG of the 3D model, then re-importing it for tracing — threshold should then work.

If you are still having difficulty, upload the file and let us know what you are having trouble with and we will look into this with you.
