Smoother Motion

When I’m running a job on my S5Pro the cutter cuts for approximately an inch or so, pauses for a second then continues. What variable affects this? It seems to me that it should cut a path without so many starts and stops. Perhaps that is just the nature of the beast?

If I had to guess, your PC might be doing too much, and cannot keep up with the machine.

  • Try rebooting and ONLY running Carbide Motion
  • If you’re using a 3rd party CAM program, it might be outputting a toolpath that’s too dense
  • You might be using an older build of CM

I running CM build 635 on an older laptop with 8gb ram. 64 bit processor, Win 10.
If CM is processor heavy, that might the issue.
I do have a newer PC I’m going to switch over to when I get a chance.

Grab 636, just in case. There was a fix for some quirky Windows driver behavior in that build.

I had that problem when I had the debug log open.

Makes sense it might be the computer. I notice also that CM is ‘busy’ quite a bit when I’m jogging the machine. There is a lag when I hit the jog and the machine moves.

Is CM more of a processor or memory hog?

I’ve had major issues with 635, causing unsteady motion and abrupt direction/speed changes that has overloaded endmills and caused weird Z drift.

So far I haven’t seen any weird movements. Just the pauses when it’s running. But a good place to start is upgrade to 636 and see what happens.

I updated CM and CC. Then made sure the only program running was CM. That fixed the studdering issues. Thanks for the help!

I get occasional stuttering on the tablets I use and every singe time, Windows is doing it’s 10th update for the week and hogging resources.

Biggest reason why an RPi or similar can be a preferable platform - it won’t do upgrades unless you tell it to or set it up to do so. You can pretty much count on the state of the system to remain unchanged & working/running exactly the same from day to day or even if you’ve had it shut off for months /years.

But the biggest con is that it won’t do anything much unless you tell it to. And it definitely requires more time & effort to get setup.

I just need to set-up Windows updates to only be when I tell it to. I just keep forgetting.

That’s great! I’ve since debugged build 635’s issues quite a bit. If you’re interested in seeing what likely caused your trouble, go read Adaptive toolpaths with C110 copper on the Nomad 3 - #29 by eos
