When I first got my SP5 pro with the spindle, when I hit the pause button the spindle would shut down and retract. Now for some reason when I hit the pause button, it just pauses the motion. It stays at the same height and the spindle keeps spinning. is there a way to set it back to how it works in the beginning?
You would have to revert to an earlier version of Carbide Motion.
that sucks! do you know if they’re going to fix it in the future?

I don’t think so as it is more confirming to industrial standard practice. I do get why it is off putting to most, but I like the new behavior better.
I remember another discussion about this subject where @robgrz indicated that they did not have enough headroom inside the controller to do a regular pause. Seems like the SO5 controller has just about every byte of memory used.
See:
The Shapeoko 5 Pro never had the “parking” function in it. That’s a function of the firmware, not Carbide Motion.
