Our Shapeoko 5 Pro’s spindle (80mm) just stopped working in the middle of a job. It’s ~6 months old.
After we discovered this and e-stopped it, Err40 showed on the VFD red LCD readout and the spindle was completely unresponsive to spinning up, even after power cycling everything (PC, VFD, control box).
AI search said it was a communication error, so I followed the instructions for unplugging and re-plugging in the connection between the VFD and the control box. The error went away from the VFD display, however when trying to spin up the spindle it produced a high pitched whine from within the spindle housing, but the endmill would only move slowly or in little jerks. The display on the VFD was showing the correct RPM, though. Here’s a video of it trying to spin up:
Am I correct in assuming the spindle is toast? If yes, does anyone in SoCal have an 80mm spindle (used or new) that I can buy off of them ASAP? Production is at a halt, and very soon customers will start getting upset. If you have one, I can pick it up tomorrow (Tue) if you’re anywhere in SoCal.
Thanks for any insight and especially if anyone has a spare 80mm they’re willing to sell.
Thanks for the quick reply, Rob. I sent an email to and am in communication with support. When doing their recommended test (to remove it from the mount, remove the tool, and test it laying on the table), I noticed that the spindle had a lot of resistance to turning by hand - which makes me suspect the bearings or bearing housing.
I ordered a new one last night, just because every day being down is so bad for us, and hopefully if you guys offer warranty repairs (if this would qualify - it has already been 6 months since I purchased it), I can send it in and get back a refurbished one that I can keep on hand as a backup to protect against any future failures.
