Spindle Running slower

Ok here is the current issue I am having…

I have vfd 65mm spindle and have not had any issues that I could not overcome until now. I have it hooked up to my Shapeoko Pro 5 machine. I am using the IDC Woodcraft 1.5 surfacing bit and have noticed that as I surface my walnut or maple boards the spindle is slowing down and eventually stalling out mid cut. I am using the listed feeds and speeds for the bit. I have always noticed that the spindle shows it is operating slower than the amount I have programmed for any bit that I use.

Any thoughts on what is going on or how to fix the issue. I would be very grateful.

PS. Also when flattening boards only in a East to West direction I am leaving a tiny line in the bottom of the path (any help with fixing that as well be very welcome.

Thank you for your help in advance!

sounds like too much load for the rather hefty bit. Recommend to reduce feed (and speed), reduce depth of cut to fractions of mm, and also reduce plunge rate to a minimum, use ramping.

That bit is meant to be the last surfacing bit, not to remove a lot of material.

In regards to the line in the path: either the bit is out of alignment, or the machine is not adjusted properly. Check for mechanical precision, re-tame.

Recommend to post some pictures here if you did that already, or did not help.

Not sure about your spindle problem but for your flattening issue see

Depending on how accurate you need to be a tiny line likely wont impact your projects. It should easily sand out if you are concerned about it.

I am running the bit at…

  • Spindle Speed: 12000 rpm
  • Feed Rate: 120 in/min
  • Plunge Rate: 8 in/min
  • Stepdown: 0.04 in
  • Stepover: 1.35 in
  • Chipload: 0.0025 in

Any thoughts on why it is stalling out? Do you think the feed rate is too fast? Again any help would be appreciated.

Looks like you are using the recommended IDC S/F’s. What is your depth of cut?
From IDC Website -

  • Speed (rpm): 12000
  • Feed: 120-150 ipm
  • Depth of cut: 0.07”
  • Stepover: 85-90%

my settings for roughing (“Goldengirl” from CICworkshop) walnut end grain:

and for smoothing

Thank you I really appreciate you attaching the screenshots they are of great help. You definitely changed your settings from the recommended.

These settings are for end grain walnut, what IMO gives some more resistance than edge grain wood.
