Wondering how hard it would be to swap out the spindle that comes with Carbide’s VFD Spindle Kit for a spindle that supports ER-20 collets.
I guess the short answer is that technically, the C3D VFD params are locked so you would not be able to update them to match a different spindle. Even if they weren’t, the Delixi VFD is quite advanced and it has a gazillion parameters, so going through the whole documentation (like I’m sure Luke did) would take a while. And then of course should anything bad happen to the VFD you would have broken warranty.
If think you absolutely need ER-20 (I thought I did and ended up rarely ever using tooling larger than 1/4") it’s probably better to go full-third-party (but then of course you have to figure out VFD wiring, settings, etc…)
I will note as a compromise that 8mm (5/16") tooling is far more rigid than 1/4" (or 6mm) and may meet your cutting needs.
If you simply need the larger collet size to accommodate metrology, then an adapter might be a workable option — there are 8mm–ER-16 collet adapters, and larger sizes might be available.
@WillAdams @Julien Thank you for the advice.
