Spindle VFD HELP

I finally got around to adding the HDZ and a 80 mm spindle that I bought in August. I was programming the VFD when I got a loud pop sound now when I power up it only flashes the power light and one know how to repair?

Was thinking of getting a new VFD does anyone have programming info as I was doing it like the video link that was included in the kit.
Thanks

The loud pop sounds like it could be the overvoltage protection varistor in the drive going off, or some other less entertaining electrical failure.

Was the sound accompanied by a delightful, persistent smell of cooked electronics by any chance?

Assuming you had it connected to the correct voltage etc. I would strongly suggest returning it to the vendor rather than attempting a repair yourself.

Edit - to add, unless you have some solid electrical knowledge please don’t open the VFD up, there are high DC voltages on the capacitors inside, more than enough energy to kill you several times over until properly discharged.

I saw a little smoke come out the fan. Asked the vendor said a warranty possibly but I’m hoping to find a good programming as it only ran 11500 with factory settings I just that’s why it said it needed programming.

I’m not opening it I know it hold power.

Did you by any chance have the spindle connected to the VFD while programming it?

The spindle should be marked with the rpm rating, usually the spindles for wood/aluminium are 24k rpm and the ones for metal are 12k rpm.

It was hooked up as the first time it didn’t seem to work
I’ll check the spindle speed it was listed as a 24000 110v kit

I just included a picture of my spindle

I would:

  • disconnect the VFD from mains
  • disconnect the spindle from the VFD

Test the spindle windings:

  • you should see isolation between U and spindle body, V and spindle body, and W and spindle body
  • the resistance of U to V, V to W, V to W should be somewhere between 0.5ohm and a few ohms.

If this all ok, your spindle is probably still fine, and you can just purchase a new VFD. Even if it’s a simple blow-up varistor, I would really not try any repair myself, there is too much at stake and a VFD is not that expensive.

On the (new) VFD: do all settings configuration with the spindle disconnected, and review EACH of them to make sure they make sense. Factory defaults are sometimes not correct. Only when you are confident that the configuration parameters are set properly, reconnect the spindle for a test.

Oh, and while you are at it make sure the Earth plug in the spindle aviation connector has continuity to the spindle body. If not, you’ll need to ground the spindle (and this requires opening it)

As the spindle is 400Hz and supposed to be 24kRPM was it the actual measured spindle speed or the speed display on the VFD that was saying 11.5kRPM?

The VFD outputs a frequency (Variable Frequency Drive) which sets the motor speed. It then also works out what speed to display based on the number of poles, the base frequency and the current frequency (which is <= the configured max frequency) and on the HuanYang the ‘rated motor revolution’.

So if you have the number of poles, rated motor revolution and base frequency right then the VFD can correctly guess the spindle speed for any given working frequency.

If the max frequency is too low then it won’t get to full speed.

e.g. if the motor base frequency is 50Hz (Rest of the World), the rated motor revolution is 3,000 and max frequency is 400Hz then the VFD can go to 400Hz output and display the spindle speed as 3,000RPM * 400 / 50Hz = 24,000RPM
