No. When you first open this file the STL is where it should be
• Select the STL in the Model window and Right Click to select Edit Component.
• Click Done.
What happens?
The issue isn’t the object immediately bouncing back. It is, as originally stated, the object repositions after clicking Done in the Edit Component window.
Notice the red bounding box you are positioning when the model is first imported. You can move it all around but once you dismiss that box the model has a "home”. The issues arise when you want to later reposition the model by selecting it in the Model panel and moving it with the black dotted box. That’s the “home” the model will return to after editing and clicking Done.
As mentioned in email I’ve resorted to a bas relief half model. This time I made sure to position it where it needed to be before dismissing the initial red box. This isn’t always as straight forward especially with multiple models and changes of plan but problem solved for this project.
Can you elaborate on that? I built the model in Blender, with which I am less than novice, by sweeping (“Spin”) a curve I created in Affinity (AD). The curve was drawn to desired mm scale in AD but looked tiny in Blender (in which I cannot find numerical sizing abilities.
When I imported the STL created in Blender into CC it was huge and I had to scale it down to about a quarter of its length. So there was no continuity of size in my work flow.
So, I guess my understanding is the behaviour is that any editing returns the model to the original position (which on re-reading seems to be what you are describing) but which I was having a hard time grasping.
It may be that there’s a technical reason for this, or it might be an oversight which would qualify it as a bug — I could definitely see the steps of:
importing model and recording its position as a 3D component
when a 3D component is moved, record the movement and add it to the 3D component information in such a way that it may be re-applied
when editing a component, re-apply the saved movement information after the editing in such a way that the applied movement will seem consistent to the user
being problematic from a programmatic perspective as well as a UI perspective, and I suspect that that latter is the concern, but I will defer to the folks who do more than just work with the program and kibbitz about it.
Just to reiterate, the repositioning is only part of the issue. The other is the three useless icons below the Model panel. Maybe this has been solved in some later version? (Which I can’t test as my Pro version ends at 836.) I really wish the icon appearing to rotate the model was functional.
So this begs a question. Does CC convert an STL to a greyscale image when using it? In other words, is using a greyscale image, converted from an STL, the same as using the original STL in both results and manipulation along the Z?
I have the pro version also, and although I’ve experienced the same repositioning issue that you have, the three buttons do work. Ensure your model is selected and then click a button to size, move, or rotate. The button only remains active till you let go of your mouse button. If your model isn’t where you want it, you’ll need to reselect the control buttons.
Not sure what the repositioning issue is but it has always been there. I’ve learned to get the model where I need it before clicking the done button, as CC doesn’t like adjusting the models.
I’m using 853 on windows, but I’ve had the .stl relocation issues going back to version 7. Took me awhile to figure out how to avoid starting over all the time.
I usually convert my images to grayscale first and then to an stl file.
I use sculptok.com free version. It does not require a grayscale image to use, but my personal opinion is that the end result is better when it starts as one. I convert to grayscale using various AI sites.
