Stock to leave? when doing 3D Roughing pass

Can someone point me to a definition or a tutorial on what “Stock to leave” under Tool Path settings for 3D Roughing Toolpath is/means.

Thank you.

is the thickness of wood between your roughing pass and the finish.

if you do roughing, you do not want to “perfectly” hit the design, since if there is any inaccuracy / deflection / slop / wiggle / … then that leaves a visual mark on the final product. Usually roughing is done with big bits at high speeds, so higher forces/etc

stock-to-leave is basically a bit of extra that is left behind (to be removed in the finishing pass) as a buffer against this.

THIS!!! is what I needed to know, thank you. So for the finishing pass, Stock to leave should be 0 then.

You can also choose to use a small “stock to leave” in some cases where you want to do some additional finishing, like sanding toolmarks, a final high grit sanding on a surface, and so forth. Depends on exactly what you’re rying to do, but my point is you don’t HAVE to do a finish pass at 0, and sometimes you specifically don’t want to.
