Hi guys!
I was cutting a test piece last night and ran into a problem. Here was my set up; cutting a spoon into Birdseye Maple, 1/8” Amana Spektra up-cut bit, I used the hardwood feeds and speeds in carbide create pro, created a rough 3D bowl in the spoon, and then created a contour cut to cutout the shape of the spoon.
Couple of things to note: my designs were made for .75” stock, however the stock I worked with was .9375” thick (that’s why there’s a small amount of stock left, about 1/4” at the bottom profile of the piece), didn’t really matter, because this was a test piece, just wanted to share in case that’s where I messed up.
What happened: About half way through the contour cut of the spoon shape, my shapeoko cut deeper into the right side of the spoon by about a 1/32 or so of an inch. (You can compare the two sides, and the opposing side, so the left side of the spoon, came out flawless!). After it cut in too deep, the shapeoko had about 4-5 more passes to finish out the contour, and with each of those 4-5 passes, the machine slowly stair stepped its way back to the original tool path, however, the damage was done. This removed a lot of crucial stock to my piece as my tolerance was small with the piece just simply due to the lip of the spoon. It won’t be a problem, cause I’ll carve out the backside by hand, which was my intention anyway, but I just wanna know what I’m doing wrong!
No, this isn’t the first time it’s happened, I’ve had other instances recently where my shapeoko will “slip” or change slightly offset the tool path. Any help here? Check out the images and let me know what you guys think I should do! I really appreciate it!!
Couple more notes: my stock never moved, I never bumped the machine, no weird sounds, no weird shakes (which have happened on other projects), stood right beside it the whole time it was cutting and I’m baffled.
Thanks!!
Hint that collage, cause it said I could only post 1 picture. Haha!
