I watched an interesting video on youtube. Studio Z made a fluted bowl on an SO5. During the video he did show progress but I suspect the time to cut this bowl was quite long. Very interesting approach.
A friend of mine lost his wife a few months ago. He and I are in a turning club and he made a really nice urn for her cremated remains. He did a spiral design but it was turned first and then hand carved. It took a very long time to complete but it came out beautiful. It likely took longer to make the urn than what was made in the video above but both techniques are quite interesting.
I’ve had the same thoughts for a while. I can create many things that have straight-engineered lines and edges, but when the curves come in I can’t seem to think it through.
I was a computer technician for most of my career. I am very good at following instructions or imitating what some one else has done. I am not overly creative in thinking up designs. I usually modify someone else’s design but dont create anything excitingly new. I do alright for a fat old man. People have been woodworking for thousands of years and what I do has likely already been done by some one else.
When I draw circles they look like eggs and when I draw eggs they look like circles. Even if I am not reinventing the wheel I enjoy what I am doing.
