Suggestions for carving specific shapes

I am working on a lantern for a friend. The main design has a curvy design. I would like to carve an outline all the way through my stock but avoid creating a gigantic hole. To clarify, there is a portion that looks similar to the letter O. I would like to retain the center of that in my final product. I’ll try to upload the SVG image…

Create a shape like this, & Unite/Weld it to the inner shape

Now subtract that shape from the outer vector

If that still looks too weak, add another tab across from that one…
