Trying to do my 1st inlay…I just have the free version of Carbide Create and trying to set my Surface Gap but there is no where to add that…in the female part, I cut it out to 0.25 and have watched videos and for the male part, they recommend a depth of 0.23 and a Surface Gap or 0.1….I am totally lost at this point
I did get the Pro trial but the option for the plug (male part) is not an option……any help would be greatly appreciated
OK, you are using version 652, it is way out of date. You don’t need pro for inlays, you should at least install the latest and try that.
Carbide Create v7 and later store toolpaths in the .c2d file as explained at:
https://carbide3d.com/blog/carbide-create-v7/
You will not need a Pro license if you have a Carbide 3D machine and a recent version of Carbide Motion.
This little cheat sheet shows the options in both Pro with Inlay mode, and without it using start & max depth.
The side gap is controlled by the difference between the female max depth & the male Start depth or Plug depth. And how the piece fits with the angle. Note that the actual plug will almost always go into the pocket deeper than designed. Whether it’s a bit of slop or runout on the machine, or just compression of the wood.
I would highly recommend trying a test on some scraps and determining your “fudge factor” and then adding that value to your Top Gap or Max Depth, and subtracting from Start Depth or Plug Depth.
I set the Male up so I can fit the female leaving the male on the machine so you can recut it.
I also move my design so it hangs off the edge of the workpiece so I can see a cross section of the fit & measure my gaps.
Maybe this video could help : https://youtu.be/8e09C0yRkJU?si=xgttEF8062dz000L
