What’s the best process for surfacing a work piece prior to machining?
I have bitsetter and bitzero on my Shapeoko 5. I also have the Whiteside 1.5" surfacing bit and am concerned how it works with the bitsetter since the bit is fairly large in diameter.
I dont have an SO5 but an SO3. I have the Whiteside 1" 3 wing cutter and it has a hole in the center so I cannot use Bitsetter with that bit. I only use the Whiteside for flattening my spoilboard so I disable the BitSetter and remove it so I dont accidentally hit it. I make my spoilboard pocket .5" bigger than my spoilboard so I dont want to hit the BitSetter. I just use the paper method.
So if your Whiteside does not have a hole in the middle like mine then the BitSetter would work. @mhotchin mentioned that when you disable the Bitsetter you need to power off your Shapeoko. I know that is true on the SO3/4 but have been told here on the forum you dont have to do that with an SO5. Since I dont have one I cannot verify that advise. I dont think it would hurt to do a power cycle but you can experiment and see if it is necessary. The SO5 is a different animal from the SO3/4 controller. The BitSetter is in a different location so just make sure you dont accidentially hit it when surfacing.
